The future begins today.

Three leaders for the future bring their unique talents and perspective to the SBA this summer, members of our annual summer student program.

Here are the students and their summer roles:

Abdirahman Ali – Process analyst

As a 4th year student specializing in strategic management, Abdirahman has extensive co-op experience in information technology, automotive industry and in his spare time enjoys working on entrepreneurial projects. With the collaboration of the summer interns, board members, and staff, Abdirahman will develop and streamline an efficient system to manage essential SBA documents, processes, and data. He is also the project lead on the newest creation of a board orientation package for incoming board members.

Bridget Quinn – Marketing and communications coordinator

Bridget is currently studying marketing and professional communications at Ryerson University. With over two years of experience conducting marketing projects, Bridget is eager to make a positive impact by increasing the visibility of the association. She looks forward to creating effective and sustainable solutions to expand SBA’s online media presence. In the future, she hopes to continue working for non-profit organizations and believes that serving the Scarborough Business Association is the perfect opportunity to develop a wide range of skills and further her passions.

Derron Yu – Membership coordinator

As an incoming second-year student studying economics and computer science at the University of Toronto, Derron will develop initiatives to increase membership and extend the SBA’s presence in the Scarborough community. He will help kickstart to organization’s youth mentorship, member-to-member and affinity programs. Derron is looking forward to using this opportunity promoting the SBA’s commitment to business in Scarborough and is excited to work collaboratively with the summer intern team and the SBA board members.

Working with our summer staff is an immensely rewarding experience,” said SBA president Peter Haggert. “It’s our goal to give them a great and worthy experience, while tapping into their tremendous abilities to forward the work of the SBA.”

Among their duties will be preparation for the annual Networking after 5 summer barbecue, held Wednesday, June 27 at Scarborough Arts. It’s free for members and their guests with a small fee for non-members, if you register by June 25. For more information press here.

This is the second year for the summer student program.

In 2017, Tasnia Sameen was part of the program:

“As a student pursuing a career in strategic management, working with the Scarborough Business Association was an amazing learning experience for me. Working as the marketing and communications coordinator, I had the chance to think creatively and strategize new ways to improve the flow of communication between the SBA and the Scarborough business community,” she said.

“While participating in outreach initiatives, I was able to interact with many business professionals which enhanced my knowledge of Scarborough’s business landscape and the tremendous scope that our community holds.”

The 2018 hiring was made possible through the Canada Summer Jobs program.
